Each city has their unique characteristics. Here are a few differences between the city of Florence & Rome.
1. Streets
Florence: Florence’s streets are small and narrow. It’s easy to get lost since there is no big main streets, although it takes less time to get to places. Florence is flat, so you won’t have to worry about walking up hills.

Rome: The streets are bigger and have a few main roads. It’s easier to navigate, but it will take longer to get to your destination. Rome is not flat like Florence. Be prepared for walking up hill most of the time.

2. Color Scheme
Florence: The color of the buildings are darker, which creates an urban feel. They have more detail as well.
Rome: This city is more colorful. The buildings have a mixture of pastels ranging from pink, green, etc. It has a more tropical feel to it.
3. Site Seeing
Florence: Florence is known for its art. From David to the Uffizi museum, this is the perfect place for art enthusiasts. Of course there are other spots to see such as the Ponte Vecchio.

Rome: Rome is a typical big city with much more to see. From the Vadican, to the Colessium, you can easily spend a week here. This is perfect for people who like longer vacations.

4. People
Florence: There are many tourists around popular spots, but I come to find myself running into more locals. You don’t feel as overwhelmed with the people either.
Rome: There are tourists EVERYWHERE. Its understandable since it’s a big city, but it can get overwhelming at times. Be careful of the pick pocketers too.
5. Time Slot
Florence: You can easily see the popular tourist spots in a weekend. Of course you can stay as long or as little as you like.
Rome: I only had 2 days in Rome, and I wish I could see more. My advice is to spend a week there if you want to get the most out of this city.
Both cities have unique characteristics. I hope this helps your decision on which city to visit, or which one you want to spend the most time in.
